How is this data produced?
Data on aquaculture production in Malaysia is collected via establishment-level surveys and censuses of aquaculture farms conducted by the Department of Fisheries (DOF). Accordingly, this data reflects the production of culturists registered with the DOF only. Production is the quantity harvested from freshwater culture systems (ponds, ex-mining pools, cages, cement/fibre and canvas tanks, pens and fish estates) and brackishwater/marine culture systems (ponds, cages, tanks, pens, mollusc culture and seaweed longlines), classified by the state where the farm is located. Wholesale and retail values are the DOF's valuation of that production at wholesale and retail prices.
The DOF's culture systems changed over time: canvas tanks are reported separately from 2007, brackishwater tanks from 2007, brackishwater pen culture from 2012 and fish estates from 2018, while from 2018 cockles, mussels and oysters are reported together as molluscs. W.P. Labuan appears from 2011 and W.P. Kuala Lumpur from 2019.
What caveats I should bear in mind when using this data?
National totals may be slightly different to the sum of state values, and totals to the sum of culture systems, due to rounding. Seaweed production is in wet weight. The DOF notes that Johor's seaweed production in 2022, 2023 and 2025 is from unregistered farmers.
