Maternal Deaths

Maternal Mortality Rate

How is this data produced?

  • A maternal death refers to the death of a woman during pregnancy or childbirth, or within 42 days after the termination of pregnancy, irrespective of the duration and site of the pregnancy. Furthermore, the death must have been from a cause related to or aggravated by the pregnancy or its management, not an accidental or unrelated cause.
  • This data is derived based on deaths registered with JPN which have been certified as a maternal death by the Ministry of Health. Data prior to 1963 refers to Peninsular Malaysia only (excluding Singapore). Data from 1963 onwards refers to the entirety of Malaysia (i.e. including Sabah and Sarawak). For a deeper understanding of the methodology and associated definition, please refer to the Technical Notes.

What caveats I should bear in mind when using this data?

This data is derived based on deaths registered with JPN. Therefore, if a maternal death is not registered with JPN (for instance, if a foreign maternal death is registered only in their home country, or a maternal death in a remote area is not registered), it will generally not count in this dataset. However, adjustment has been made to the number of deaths in Sabah to account for the under-reporting of deaths detected based on the 'Study of Under Reporting of Deaths in Sabah', which was conducted by DOSM and approved by the Steering Committee on Implementation of Civil Registration and Vital Statistics in 2016.
