How is this data produced?

This data is compiled by Bank Negara Malaysia from Federal Government debt records, and reflects the nominal value of debt outstanding at the end of each period, classified by remaining maturity. A few key relationships should be noted:

  • Total debt is the sum of domestic and external debt.
  • Domestic debt comprises Treasury Bills, Malaysian Government Investment Issues (MGII), Malaysian Government Securities (MGS) and other loans; MGII and MGS are further broken down by remaining maturity.
  • External debt comprises non-resident holdings of ringgit-denominated Federal Government debt, and foreign currency (offshore) borrowing in the form of market loans and project loans.

What caveats I should bear in mind when using this data?

Numbers may not add up due to rounding during derivation.
