Annual landings and wholesale and retail value of marine fish landings by state, coast, category and grade of fish.
0 views·0 downloads
Data on landings of marine fish in Malaysia is collected via establishment-level surveys and censuses conducted by the Department of Fisheries (DOF). Accordingly, this data reflects the production of establishments registered with the DOF only. In layperson terms, this means that the fish caught by individuals fishing for personal consumption are not included in this data.
The DOF values landings at wholesale and retail prices, and classifies fish, prawns and squid into grades by species: for fish, Grade A1 covers premium species such as pomfrets, threadfins and groupers, Grade A2 species such as snappers, Spanish mackerel and giant sea perch, Grade B species such as small pomfrets, shads and trevallies, and Grade C all other fish; prawns are graded similarly from lobsters and tiger prawns (A1) to other prawns (C), and squid into common squids and cuttlefish (A) and octopus and others (B). The species in each grade have been revised over time. Classification by coast and state is based on where the fish was landed.
Values are in Ringgit Malaysia (RM) at current prices. The species in each grade have been revised over time, so grades are not strictly comparable across years; in particular, the split of squid between Grades A and B shifts sharply in some years. National totals may be slightly different to the sum of state values, and totals to the sum of grades and categories, due to rounding.

Name in Dataset | Variable | Definition |
|---|---|---|
date (Date) | Date | The date in YYYY-MM-DD format, with MM-DD set to 01-01 as the data is at annual frequency |
coast (Categorical) | Coast | The coast where the fish was landed; either all coasts ('all'), the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia ('east'), west coast of Peninsular Malaysia ('west') or Borneo ('borneo') |
state (Categorical) | State | The state where the fish was landed; one of 14 states (excluding W.P. Kuala Lumpur and W.P. Putrajaya, which do not have coastlines), 'All States' for a coast's total, or Malaysia. Johor is a part of both the east and west coast data. |
category (Categorical) | Category | The category of catch as classified by DOF: fish, prawns, squid, crabs, shellfish, mixed fish, trash fish, miscellaneous, or 'total' for all categories |
grade (Categorical) | Grade | The grade within the category (A1, A2, B or C for fish and prawns; A or B for squid), or 'total' for all grades; categories which are not graded only have 'total' |
landings (Float) | Landings | Landings in metric tonnes |
value_wholesale (Integer) | Wholesale Value | Value of the landings at wholesale prices, in RM |
value_retail (Integer) | Retail Value | Value of the landings at retail prices, in RM |
