Annual number of licensed powered fishing vessels by state, coast, engine type and horsepower class.

Data on fishing vessels in Malaysia is compiled by the Department of Fisheries (DOF) from its licensing records, and counts the vessels licensed by the DOF for marine capture fisheries in the year. Accordingly, unlicensed boats, including those used for fishing for personal consumption, are not included in this data. Only powered vessels are covered; non-powered vessels are excluded.
It should be noted that W.P. Kuala Lumpur and W.P. Putrajaya are excluded from the data as they do not have coastlines. Classification by coast and state follows the fisheries district in which the vessel is licensed. Vessels are classified by engine type (inboard or outboard engines, and from 2025 long-tail or pump engines) and by the horsepower of the engine.
Non-powered vessels are excluded. Long-tail and pump engines are reported separately only from 2025, with horsepower classes of 10-15 hp and 16-19 hp instead of 10-19 hp; in earlier years such vessels are included under the other engine types.

Name in Dataset | Variable | Definition |
|---|---|---|
date (Date) | Date | The date in YYYY-MM-DD format, with MM-DD set to 01-01 as the data is at annual frequency |
coast (Categorical) | Coast | The coast where the fishing vessel is licensed; either all coasts ('all'), the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia ('east'), west coast of Peninsular Malaysia ('west') or Borneo ('borneo') |
state (Categorical) | State | The state where the fishing vessel is licensed; one of 14 states (excluding W.P. Kuala Lumpur and W.P. Putrajaya, which do not have coastlines), 'All States' for a coast's total, or Malaysia. Johor is a part of both the east and west coast data. |
engine (Categorical) | Engine Type | The vessel's engine type: inboard, outboard or (from 2025) long-tail/pump engine, or 'total' for all powered vessels |
horsepower (Categorical) | Horsepower | The horsepower class of the vessel's engine, as classified by DOF within each engine type, or 'total' for all classes |
vessels (Integer) | Vessels | Number of licensed fishing vessels |
