How is this data produced?

Data on mineral extraction in Malaysia is produced by the Mineral Intelligence Unit based on data collected via establishment-level surveys and censuses conducted by the Department of Mineral and Geoscience (JMG), in collaboration with the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM). Accordingly, this data reflects the extractive activities of establishments registered with the DMG only. The data shown here is also used for the production of Malaysia's official GDP statistics.

From a definitional perspective, it should be noted that:

  • The production of non-metallic aggregates in Sabah and Sarawak includes gravel.
  • Silica production includes silica sand, as well as sand as a by-product of tin mining and crushed quartz rock.

What caveats I should bear in mind when using this data?

National totals may be slightly different to the sum of state values due to rounding.
