How is this data produced?
This data is derived from transactional records of ATM-based services settled through the Shared ATM Network (SAN) operated by PayNet (via its subsidiary MEPS), Malaysia's national payments network and central financial infrastructure. SAN transactions are recorded in real time as they occur through the interbank ATM switching network, where customers of participating banks authorise actions such as cash withdrawals, funds transfers, or deposits at ATMs not belonging to their own bank (interbank or 'off-us' transactions). Each transaction is captured centrally by PayNet's infrastructure.
Daily aggregates are generated by summing the number of completed (settled) transactions (volume) and their total monetary value (in RM) for each date, segmented by geographic scope. The segments are as follows:
- Local (domestic): Transactions processed entirely within Malaysia across participating domestic banks' ATMs.
- Regional (cross-border): Limited transactions involving outbound cash withdrawals or related services in select participating countries (e.g., Indonesia, Thailand, and Singapore).
For the purpose of publication via data.gov.my, PayNet conducts the aggregation and provides only the daily totals; no transaction-level data is ever disseminated outside PayNet's systems.
What caveats I should bear in mind when using this data?
This dataset is provided with the highest practical timeliness (updated by 2am daily for data up to the previous day) due to its high potential for use in nowcasting and forecasting models. However, there may occasional revisions to ensure eventual consistency with the monthly payment statistics published by the Central Bank of Malaysia (BNM). Furthermore, users should note that data for 2023-09-07 is missing at this time; this will be rectified by 1 March 2026.
