How is this data produced?

Conceptually, a unit value index measures changes in the average price of exported or imported goods, while a volume index measures changes in their quantity. The terms of trade is the ratio of the export unit value index to the import unit value index, multiplied by 100; a value above 100 means that export prices have risen relative to import prices since 2010.

Malaysia's external trade indices are compiled from external trade statistics, which are processed mainly from customs declarations. Unit value indices (Laspeyres indices weighted by the value of trade in 2015, chain-linked in December 2018 to keep the reference year 2010 = 100) are calculated for between 80-90% of the value of exports and imports in 2015. Volume indices (Paasche indices) are derived by deflating the value of exports and imports by the corresponding unit value index. Exports are valued free on board (f.o.b.) and imports at cost, insurance and freight (c.i.f.). Lumpy imports such as aircraft and ships are excluded, as are items traded in fewer than seven months of the year. All indices are published for the 10 sections of the Standard International Trade Classification (SITC Rev. 4). Only the volume indices are seasonally adjusted, using X-12 ARIMA together with SEAM (Seasonal Adjustment for Malaysia), which also removes the effect of moving holidays such as Hari Raya Aidilfitri, Chinese New Year and Deepavali.

What caveats I should bear in mind when using this data?

Seasonally adjusted data for the previous three years is revised once a year, when a full year of data is available.
